Love In a Two-Star Hotel (And A Five Star Marriage)
Heritage Happenings, Your Friday Newsletter
“Living the Suite Life — Sort Of”
So, here we are.
Renee and I have been living in a small hotel room for what feels like a biblical wilderness journey, but apparently the calendar says it’s only been a few weeks while we wait to close on our house.
And listen… marriage hits different when your “living room,” “office,” and “sanctuary” are all the same 300 square feet.
After 31 years of marriage, you’d think we’d have this down. Nope. Turns out, love has new levels… and louder sound effects.
For example:
My wife eats cereal like she’s auditioning for the percussion section of the Houston Symphony. Every crunch is a prophecy.
I, apparently, “breathe too loudly.” I didn’t even know that was a thing — but apparently, it’s a spiritual issue.
She’s suggested I “go to work earlier.” I suggested she “eat breakfast quieter.” That conversation did not go well.
And before coffee, I’m told I’m “less saved” than I am afterward.
But in all this — somewhere between the cereal symphonies and the Holy Ghost side-eye — I’ve learned something:
Love isn’t about space… it’s about grace.
Love Shrinks Rooms but Expands Hearts
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
— 1 Peter 4:8
When you’re living that close to another human being, the “small stuff” stops being small.
Towels folded wrong.
Toothpaste squeezed from the middle (that’s demonic, by the way).
Somebody hogs the one good pillow, and suddenly you’re on the edge of your sanctification.
But here’s what I’ve learned — the same grace that fills cathedrals can fill a closet, a car, or a cramped hotel room.
God uses tight spaces to grow patient hearts.
Sometimes He lets you get squeezed so the fruit of the Spirit can get pressed.
Of course there are applications here with Heritage Church and our small space that we are trying to make work for every ministry both ones we have now and ones we will have in the future!!!
Love, joy, peace, patience — those fruits ripen best under pressure.
(And sometimes after repenting for what you said before the coffee kicked in.)
Comfort Doesn’t Build Character — Closeness Does
“Bear with each other and forgive one another… Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
— Colossians 3:13
You think you’re holy until you’ve had to share a bathroom sink with your spouse during your “quiet time.”
Marriage doesn’t just teach love — it teaches self-control.
Because when your spouse is brushing their teeth right next to your open Bible, you find out just how saved you really are.
God doesn’t use comfort to build character; He uses closeness.
The closer you get, the more opportunities you get to practice grace, mercy, and that beautiful phrase: “I’m sorry… again.”
Every sigh you swallow, every “let it go” moment, every “I’ll love you anyway” brick builds something stronger than drywall — it builds devotion.
Sometimes God says, “I’m not giving you space — I’m giving you sanctification.”
And let’s be real… character development should come with warning labels.
Love Is Louder Than Our Flaws
“Love never fails.” — 1 Corinthians 13:8
Let’s be honest — Marriage is basically two flawed humans trying to share a thermostat.
Love doesn’t mean perfection; it means persistence.
It’s laughing when you want to yell, forgiving when you want to flee, and choosing to love even when your partner snores like a Harley Davidson left idling in neutral.
Love is louder than the flaws, the quirks, and the 6 a.m. alarms that sound like the second trumpet of Revelation.
Love keeps saying, “I still choose you,” even when the eggs are rubbery and the Wi-Fi’s weak.
Because when Jesus is the center, you realize the goal isn’t just to survive the squeeze — it’s to shine in it.
Love doesn’t just endure pressure — it performs miracles under it.
The hotel may be small, but our laughter and love are louder than ever.
We’ve learned that homes don’t make marriages — hearts do.
Love’s not built with square footage; it’s built with faith, forgiveness, and caffeine.
So, wherever you are — hotel, apartment, fixer-upper, or dream home — let love do the building.
And for heaven’s sake, don’t talk to anybody before coffee.
Mansions nah, Micro-Suite Yes…
Sometimes God doesn’t give you a mansion — He gives you a micro-suite, just to prove His grace still fits in small spaces.
Because if your love can thrive in a two-star hotel, you’re already living a five-star marriage.
The Best Is Yet to Come.
Rev. John Roberts
THIS SUNDAY at Heritage Church!
One Service – Traditional at 10:30 AM
Message- “Hope In 4-K”
HOPE CHANGES HOW YOU SEE
Hope doesn’t just change your circumstances — it changes you.
It shifts your prayers from “God, get me out of this” to “God, grow me through this.”
It lifts your focus off the pain and locks it on the promise. 🔭
Because when people see peace in your storm, they’ll want to know the Captain who’s steering your ship.
Hope moves you from “God get me out of this…” to “God help me grow through this…”
This Sunday, Pastor John Roberts brings a powerful message about what happens when faith looks foolish, hope won’t quit, and God uses your pit to build your platform.
If anyone’s ever told you you’re “a little crazy” for believing God still has big plans for your life — GOOD. That just means you’re believing for something only Heaven could pull off.
Bring a friend who needs encouragement.
Bring a friend who needs Jesus.
There’s an empty seat waiting for them — and for you.
It’s real. It’s raw. It’s filled with hope.
Come ready to laugh, to worship, and to remember this truth:
When you put your hope in God — you stop seeing what’s wrong and start seeing what’s possible.
Join us for Worship this Sunday, the King of Kings will be in the room!
See you soon, with a friend!
The Power of Generosity:
Building What Heaven Sees
When we give, we’re not just funding a church — we’re fueling a movement.
At Heritage Church, every dollar, every act of generosity, every recurring gift helps make the impossible tangible. We’re not just keeping the lights on; we’re turning the light outward — to shine into the darkest corners of broken marriages, addiction, grief, and spiritual lostness.
We give because we believe in a God who still restores.
We give because we’ve seen Him heal what the world said was finished.
We give because we want every child, every teen, every weary soul to know: you are not forgotten.
Our vision isn’t small. We’re dreaming of a church that:
Restores marriages and rebuilds homes.
Reaches addicts and the lost with grace and truth.
Guides our children and students into a living faith that lasts a lifetime.
Helps the grieving walk from sorrow into gratitude.
Brings healing to the brokenhearted.
And most of all — gives glory to God in everything we do.
We’re praying for heaven to touch earth — for “up there to come down here.”
And part of that calling means growing into more worship services, creating more room for the people who aren’t here yet.
That’s what generosity does — it opens doors for people who haven’t walked through them yet.
We don’t give to preserve what is.
We give to build what can be.
And yes — sometimes giving also means fixing what we already have.
Our church needs a real invitational sign!
Our parking lot needs repair.
But those aren’t just projects — they’re invitations.
A sign that points people to Jesus.
A parking space for the next family that walks in broken, looking for hope.
So let’s be the kind of church that gives faithfully, joyfully, and sacrificially.
Let’s grow in our generosity by setting up recurring online giving — because steady faith fuels steady impact.
Renee and I are giving sacrificially, too — because we believe in what God is doing here.
We’re not asking anyone to do something we’re not doing ourselves.
We’re in this together — all of us, all in, for Jesus.
Heritage, this is our moment.
Let’s give like heaven’s counting on us.
Because when God’s people give with open hands and open hearts — the best really is yet to come.
Daylight Saving Time Is Coming!
Sunday, November 2, 2025
Good news, Heritage Church—you’re about to get the most spiritual gift of all... an extra hour of sleep!
Before you head to bed on Saturday night, be sure to set your clocks back one hour and enjoy that bonus snooze before Sunday service.
Because nothing says “I’m ready to worship” like showing up refreshed, caffeinated, and on time.
So go ahead—hit that snooze button guilt-free.
We’ll see you Sunday morning at Heritage Church, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and one hour more rested.
Coffee will still be hot. The grace will still be free.
Here at Heritage Church, we stand in the long tradition of the Reformers—those ordinary believers who dared to believe that God’s Word is alive, powerful, and personal. Their cry of Sola Scriptura—Scripture alone—wasn’t just a slogan; it was a declaration that God’s Word is enough to lead, feed, and transform His people.
We believe that transformation doesn’t come from good intentions or good vibes—it comes from the renewing of our minds through the Word of God (Romans 12:2).
The Word doesn’t just inform you; it forms you.
It doesn’t just teach you; it transforms you.
And when the Word of God gets inside you, it doesn’t just change what you believe—it changes who you become.
That’s why, at Heritage, we’re serious about creating spaces where the Bible isn’t just read—it’s lived.
You’ll find a wide variety of Bible study opportunities below—each one designed to help you dig deeper, grow stronger, and live freer through the living Word of God.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not enough to know about the Bible.
The goal is to let the Bible know you—to open your heart, not just your notes.
So lean in, open your Bible, and get ready.
Because when you study the Word, you don’t just gain knowledge—you step into transformation.
Holy Grounds at Heritage Church
Coffee and Conversation with Pastor John
How can a shepherd truly love his sheep if he doesn’t know them?
That’s why I want to sit down with you—over a good cup of coffee—and get to know your hopes, dreams, and schemes (yes, even the wild ones). Let’s talk about your hurts, your hopes, and where you see God stirring in your story.
This isn’t a meeting—it’s a moment to connect heart-to-heart. Because ministry isn’t about programs; it’s about people. And I’d love to know the people God’s called me to love.
Join me for Holy Grounds every Sunday at 9AM in my office or by appointment during the week.

Let’s grab a cup, share some laughs, maybe even a few tears, and remember: the best conversations often start with caffeine and end with calling.
