Put Your Shoes On
God Answers Prayers With Preparation, Not Participation Trophies
God Preps You Before He Promotes You
Here’s the spiritual plot twist nobody warns you about:
When you pray,
“Lord, help me win in life!”
God rarely hands you a heavenly trophy with your name engraved in gold calligraphy.
Nope.
He hands you spiritual running shoes and says,
“Alright champ, start stretching.”
We want medals.
God hands out equipment.
We want instant victory.
God says, “Welcome to training camp.”
We want shortcuts.
God gives character development.
(Which, let’s be honest, is just God’s gym membership program for your soul.)
God often answers prayers with process, not prizes.
David — The Shepherd Boy Who Got a Sling, Not a Sword
David prayed for deliverance for Israel.
He did NOT get:
a war horse
body armor
a sponsorship from Under Armour
a WWE entrance theme
He got sheep duty.
And a sling.
And rocks he probably picked up on the way.
God didn’t hand David a crown —
He handed him responsibility.
Because:
Before David could rule a kingdom, he had to conquer a lion, a bear, and his own insecurity.
He prayed for victory.
God handed him practice battles.
Moses — The Guy Who Got a Staff Instead of a Strategy
Moses asked God to rescue Israel from Egypt.
God did NOT send:
an Egyptian resignation letter
a political uprising
or Moses’ face on a “Liberator of the Year” billboard
He gave Moses a stick.
A stick.
Seriously, you want me to go take on the world’s most powerful man and you said, “Don’t forget this, here’s your stick…”
Yet that stick became:
a snake
a sign
a tool of deliverance
a faith-building device
God doesn’t give you the medal.
He gives you the tool that will help you win.
But you’ve got to swing it.
Joshua — God Gave Him a Command, Not a Comfort Zone
Joshua prayed for the courage to conquer the Promised Land.
God did NOT give him:
a military blueprint
a five-year strategic plan
a PowerPoint presentation with bullet points and estimated timelines
Nope.
God said:
“Be strong and courageous… and walk.”
He wanted victory.
God gave him movement.
He wanted revelation.
God gave him obedience steps.
He wanted walls to fall.
God said,
“Here’s how we’re gonna do this… take a walk.”
Because God trains forward faith one lap at a time.
The Divine Pattern: God Gives Us Shoes, Not Medals
Let’s be honest:
We love the idea of overnight breakthrough.
We want spiritual UberEats — “miracle arriving in 12 minutes, tip your angel.”
But Scripture consistently shows:
God won’t give you a medal until you’ve used the shoes.
You pray for patience → You get difficult people
You pray for faith → You get situations that require it
You pray for strength → You get weight to lift
You pray for guidance → You get a step, not a map
You pray for victory → You get training
God is not rewarding illusion.
He is building endurance.
This is Hebrews 12 for the Netflix generation:
“Let us run with endurance the race set before us…”
Run.
Not scroll.
Not binge.
Not wait for God to carry you like a Roomba vacuum.
Run.
The Marvel Cinematic Application (Because Obviously)
Think of your life like a superhero origin story.
Marvel does not hand Spider-Man a medal in Scene One.
First, he gets bit by a spider.
Then he gets humbled.
Then he trains.
Then Uncle Ben drops wisdom.
Then he fails.
Then he gets back up.
Then we get a plot twist.
Only THEN does he become the guy we cheer for.
God does the same.
He puts you through an origin arc because He knows that
Premature promotion crushes unprepared people.
So instead of giving you the “Spider-Man Medal,”
He gives you the “Spider-Man Bite.”
The moment that forces you to grow.
It’s not punishment —
it’s equipping.
Jesus & the Disciples — The Training Montages Before Transformation
Jesus didn’t call disciples and say,
“Congrats boys! Here are your medals! You’re apostles now!”
The disciples got:
walking shoes
dusty roads
confusing parables
storms as object lessons
miracles as faith labs
rebukes as tuning forks
cross-shaped invitations
Because Jesus doesn’t produce medal-winners.
He produces:
worshippers
workers
warriors
witnesses
People who can run their race.
Your Turn: What Shoes Has God Handed You?
You prayed for:
“God, help me grow spiritually!”
He handed you:
a Bible
a challenge
a quiet place
a tough season
a new responsibility
You prayed:
“God help me be stronger!”
He handed you:
resistance
stretching
an emotional gym membership
You prayed:
“Lord use me!”
He handed you:
shoes
opportunities
uncomfortable assignments
people to love
places to serve
moments to step up
Why?
Because medals reward winners.
Shoes make them.
God answers your prayer for victory not by giving you the reward…
but by giving you the ability.
He doesn’t shortcut your story.
He strengthens your stride.
He doesn’t crown you prematurely.
He prepares you prophetically.
You don’t get the medal by asking.
You get it by running.
Lace Up. Show Up. Run Forward.
God is not teasing you with destiny.
He is training you for it.
Those shoes in your hand?
They are your calling costume.
Your spiritual Air Jordans.
Your burning-bush Birkenstocks.
Your “kingdom-crossover-cushioned-for-purpose” footwear.
Put. Them. On.
Because the race set before you isn’t random.
And the finish line ahead of you is not a fantasy —
it’s your future.
The best is yet to come,
Rev. John Roberts
If you ask God to help you win a marathon,
He will send you a pair of shoes —
not a medal.

I try to focus on using the gifts that I have to honor God and to not give in to comparing my path with others’. God has plans for each of us, and it is our task to follow it. Thank you, John for always giving me guidance and hope!
