Stretchy Pants and Searching Hearts...
Heritage Happenings, Your Mini-Friday Newsletter
Welcome to Advent Eve — also known as the day after Thanksgiving — when America wakes up fueled by leftovers, gratitude, and the collective realization that stretchy pants were the greatest invention since indoor plumbing.
Let’s be honest: yesterday we didn’t share a meal… we survived a culinary battle.
We ate like the turkey personally wronged us.
And now, here we stand on Friday, held together by caffeine and elastic waistbands, trying to remember what hunger even feels like.
But while we’re slowly recovering from our national food marathon, Advent sneaks up on us like,
“Hey… ready to focus on Jesus?”
And we’re over here still trying to breathe.
But here’s the thing — Advent isn’t about catching our breath after Thanksgiving.
It’s not even about getting ready for Christmas.
It’s about getting ready for Christ.
It’s not about wrapping all the gifts;
it’s about unwrapping the Gift — the grace and love of God.
It’s not about perfect trees, perfect lights, perfect cookies, or perfect family photos where everyone pretends not to be annoyed.
It’s about making room for the Perfect Savior.
And yet, in the next few weeks, we’ll definitely act like Advent is a home-decorating triathlon:
Untangling lights that were clearly wrapped by an enemy of the human race
Decorating trees that looked six feet tall in the store but now take up half the living room
Shopping like the entire economy rests on our shoulders
And filling our calendars so full that even the wise men would’ve said, “Yeah… we’re going to sit this one out.”
Meanwhile, Amazon packages begin piling up like we’re prepping for a cozy little household apocalypse.
And in the noise, the rush, the receipts, the lists, the lights, and the endless “Wait… did we forget someone?” moments, something deep inside us whispers:
“Are we preparing for Christmas… or preparing for Christ?”
Because you can be so busy doing all the things — the shopping, the wrapping, the planning, the scrolling, the decorating —
that you never stop to ask:
“Busy doing what?”
If the shepherds had been that busy, they would’ve missed the angels.
Spend As Much on the Soul as You Do on the Season
Advent is about longing—about the ache for God to draw near.
But modern life does everything it can to bury that ache under busyness, bargains, and 47 different versions of “Jingle Bell Rock.”
Research from Gallup, Harvard’s Human Flourishing Project, and multiple psychological studies all point to the same conclusion:
People are searching—deeply searching—for meaning, belonging, and love.
But many are looking in all the wrong places.
We decorate for peace instead of dwelling in God’s presence.
We shop for joy instead of pursuing Jesus.
We wrap gifts instead of unwrapping grace.
Don’t let your calendar be so full that your spirit becomes empty.
You can miss Jesus by accident, but you only meet Him on purpose.
TEMPORARY THINGS SHOUT — ETERNAL THINGS WHISPER
Jesus told us not to store up treasures on earth but in heaven (Matthew 6:19–21).
Why?
Because earthly things shout. They demand. They distract. They dominate.
But eternal things whisper. And whispers are best heard in stillness, not chaos.
Make sure your December looks less like a marathon… and more like a manger.
WHATEVER YOU FEED GROWS
If you feed stress, stress grows.
If you feed hurry, hurry grows.
If you feed anxiety, anxiety grows.
But if you feed your soul—your soul grows.
So practice Holy Priorities:
Before you put up the lights, open the Scriptures.
Before you shop, sit in silence.
Before you wrap gifts, unwrap grace in prayer.
Before you prepare your home, prepare room for Christ in your heart.
Don’t prepare a perfect Christmas and forget you need a perfect Savior.
“UP THERE COME DOWN HERE” — THE PURPOSE OF ADVENT
When Jesus taught us to pray,
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,”
He wasn’t giving us a holiday slogan — He was giving us our mission.
Bring Up There down here.
That’s Advent.
God breaking into time.
Heaven interrupting earth.
Christ stepping into our chaos with calm, clarity, hope, and redemption.
So don’t just make your home look like Christmas—
make your life look like Christ.
Because the world doesn’t need more decorations.
It needs more demonstrations—of hope, of peace, of love, of Jesus.
A FINAL WORD FOR THE SEASON
Slow down.
Look up.
Lean in.
Make space.
Spend as much on your soul as you do on the shopping list.
Seek the eternal.
Chase the things that carry Kingdom weight.
The same God who came once is still coming close-
When He draws near, everything changes.
In Advent, truly, “The Best Is Yet to Come,”

Faces at the Manger — Advent Sermon Series
This Advent, Faces at the Manger invites us to gather around the miracle of Christ’s birth and take a fresh look at the people—and even the unexpected figures—who found themselves drawn to the Savior. We’ll reflect on the familiar cast we know so well, but we’ll also meet some surprising “faces” whose presence has something powerful to teach us.
This series isn’t just about being informed—it’s about being transformed. Advent reminds us that when Jesus enters the world, nothing stays the same.
Hope breaks in, light pushes back the dark, and hearts are changed—because we all know a baby changes everything.
We’d love for you to join us throughout this holy season:
Traditional Worship led by our Choir — Sundays
Special Choir Cantata — December 14 at 10:30 AM

Hope. Heart. Holy Spirit. And a whole lot of Jesus.
Heritage Family,
As we wrap up this year, can we just pause and say: WOW, God has been busy. Attendance is up, giving is rising, hope is breathing again — and our second service launches soon. Not bad for a church refusing to go quietly into the night.
To everyone who’s already given this year:
THANK. YOU. Seriously — you’re the MVPs of “miracle momentum.”
Now… onto the delicate subject of giving.
(Deep breath. Crack knuckles. Here we go.)
A Little Snarky Truth:
We all want God to do big things.
But big miracles still start the old-fashioned way:
people giving whatever they can, however they can.
The widow? Gave her last oil.
The disciples? Handed over their lunchables.
Peter? Stepped out of a perfectly good boat.
So yes — your gift matters.
Any amount.
$5 or $50, $500 or “Dear Lord, did they add an extra zero?”
It all builds momentum.
Why Your Year-End Gift Matters
Not because of bills.
Not because “budgets need love too.”
But because generosity builds spiritual traction —and traction builds revival.
These last 5 weeks, we’ve made major upgrades — LED wall, A/V system, new website, new social media platforms, New LED church sign, new pastor, parking lot…
These aren’t luxuries — they’re tools for mission.
Total needed: $130K just for the Parking Lot and new Church Sign (which has been ordered and is on the way)
Total faith: high.
Total panic: 0%.
(We’ve seen God do crazier things.)
So Here’s the Ask:
Before the year ends, would you jump in and give a Year-End Christmas Gift?
Small, medium, large, humongous — whatever the Holy Spirit nudges (or shoves) you toward.
You can give:
– In person
– At the Christmas services
– Online (choose “Year-End Christmas Gift”)
– By mail
– Through the app tithely!
– Or scan the QR code like a boss
Let’s Finish Strong.
Let’s start 2026 with faith, momentum and believing God for big things next year — but the on-ramp starts right now.
Thank you for giving.
Thank you for believing.
Thank you for being the church that refuses to settle for anything less than transformation.
Let’s build a Home for Every Heart — together.
With love, laughter, and ridiculous hope,
Pastor John
