Quit Trying to Be Everyone's Sweet Tea
The Heritage Happenings...Your Friday Mini-Newsletter!
When Being Liked Isn’t the Goal
Some people walk into a room and everyone lights up.
Others walk in and everyone tightens up.
And then… there’s you.
The one who gets stuff done.
Because let’s be honest — Likable doesn’t always mean fruitful.
Some folks are “sweet tea” Christians: easy to sip, full of sugar, and spiritually useless beyond the porch.
Comforting, familiar, pleasantly predictable… and absolutely incapable of shaking heaven or disturbing hell.
But then there are the “Living Water” believers — the ones who may not win “Miss Congeniality,” yet heaven’s scoreboard keeps lighting up because of their obedience.
Their fruit may offend someone’s nostalgia, but it pleases God — and that’s what actually matters.
Stop Trying to Be Everyone’s Cup of Tea
(You’re Called to Be Living Water)
Let’s settle this now: You will never be universally liked.
Jesus wasn’t.
Paul wasn’t.
Moses definitely wasn’t (ask Korah — or rather, the ground that swallowed him).
Jesus even warned us:
“Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you.” — Luke 6:26
If nobody’s ever mad at you, you’re probably not doing much that matters.
Let me say it this way:
“If everyone agrees with you, you might be following the crowd instead of Christ.”
The goal of ministry isn’t applause — it’s alignment with God.
Lead. Love. Serve.
And live in such a way that even your critics eventually have to admit, “Yeah… but they’re getting it done.”
Sweet Tea Feels Good—Living Water Does Good
It’s okay if people don’t clap when you walk into the room.
Just make sure they can’t deny what happens after you leave it.
Jesus didn’t die to make you pleasant—
He died to make you powerful.
Not sweet… but Spirit-filled.
Not comfortable… but called.
So stop being sweet tea—
sitting on the porch, sugary and stagnant, protecting appearances, avoiding waves.
Get up.
Get moving.
Get flowing.
Be the Living Water Christian Jesus died to make you.
Don’t be sweet tea—be Living Water: not always liked, but always life-giving.
When Ministries Start to Feel Like Museums
Any pastor that is in my shoes, brand new to everyone and trying to get to know everyone, but I also don’t have a lot of time to turn things around…and let’s be clear, that’s where Heritage has been, dying and in decline…
Every pastor eventually walks into a church that has a few ministries which — on paper — sound “faithfully maintained,” but in reality have quietly turned into historical exhibits.
The lights are still on, but the last sign of life happened sometime between the invention of Wi-Fi and the fall of Blockbuster.
The files are untouched.
The posts are fossilized.
The systems haven’t just slowed — they’ve slipped into early retirement.
And the moment you gently rebuild, refresh, or revive anything…
someone emerges with a sentimental deed to a ministry they haven’t dusted off since dial-up.
Then come the whispers:
“They didn’t ask my permission.”
“If they keep making changes, I’ll leave.”
“Someone took something from me.”
Fascinating — not in a “fun fact” way, but in a “this explains why we’ve been stuck for a while way.
Churches can’t be held hostage to personal preferences, we must always seek the greater good, the Kingdom of God!
We must seek what is working, not what we tried and didn’t work.
Live into what works.
Because nothing exposes the spiritual health of a church faster than how it reacts when the mission moves forward but personal preferences don’t get consulted first.
Some churches treat ministries like family heirlooms — dusty, fragile, off-limits.
Growing churches treat ministries like gardens — pruned, replanted, and always producing new life.
One asks,
“Who are we called to reach next?”
The other asks,
“Who will get mad if we change something?”
One grows.
The other… hosts reunions.
When Preferences Become Idols (Exodus 32)
When Moses went up the mountain, Israel got impatient and said,
“We want a god we LIKE — one that fits our preferences.”
So they built the golden calf.
It was shiny.
It was familiar.
It did absolutely nothing.
Just like the ministries people defend long after they’ve stopped producing fruit.
“The moment a ministry becomes mine, it stops serving God and starts serving my ego.”
Territorial Thinking Is the Sign of Decline
Church health research shows:
Growing churches innovate, empower, evaluate, adjust.
Plateaued churches cling to what’s familiar.
Declining churches elevate personal preferences above the Great Commission.
Dying churches say:
“Let’s keep everyone happy.”
Growing churches say:
“Let’s reach who we’re NOT reaching yet.”
One leads to revival.
The other leads to hospice.
I have only led revivals!
Jesus Never Said, “Keep Everyone Comfortable”
Jesus constantly disrupted religious comfort zones.
He cleansed the temple.
He restructured leadership.
He never preserved the status quo — He confronted it.
Imagine telling Jesus,
“Lord, don’t change anything — someone might leave.”
Jesus would say,
“Then let them go. This is a mission, not a museum.”
He wasn’t the Sweet Tea Messiah — sugary, soothing, and safe.
He was the Living Water Messiah — refreshing, confronting, cleansing, flowing.
“Jesus didn’t come to make the saints cozy; He came to call the lost home.”
Healthy Churches Embrace Mission, Not Maintenance
The early church never said:
• “This is my ministry!”
• “We’ve always done it this way!”
They said:
• “Let’s devote ourselves to prayer.”
• “Let’s appoint new leaders.”
• “Let’s go where the Spirit leads.”
• “Let’s reach more people.”
Healthy churches ask:
“What does obedience look like in this season?”
Dying churches ask:
“What does convenience look like in this season?”
One moves forward.
One circles the parking lot.
When People Weaponize Leaving
There will always be someone who says,
“If this changes, I’m leaving.”
Let them.
In John 6, Jesus preached truth and the entire crowd left.
He didn’t negotiate.
He didn’t soften the message.
He didn’t chase them.
He simply turned to the faithful few and asked,
“Do you want to leave too?”
Never sacrifice the future of your church to satisfy the preferences of the past.
Read that one more time, slowly!
God’s Work Isn’t Preserved by Sentiment, But by Obedience
Some people want the church frozen at the exact moment they fell in love with it.
But God says,
“Behold, I am doing a new thing.” (Isaiah 43:19)
Not the old thing repackaged.
Not the tired thing defended.
Not the declining thing preserved out of nostalgia.
A new thing.
Your calling is not to maintain a ministry museum.
Your calling is to build God’s Kingdom.
You’re Not a Sweet Tea
Sweet tea is nice.
But it won’t revive a spiritually dehydrated church.
God didn’t call you to be a “make-everyone-Christian”
He called you to be a “lead-them-into-the-Promised-Land”
Not to protect preferences.
To pursue purpose.
Not to maintain what’s familiar.
To reach who’s missing.
Not to babysit dying ministries.
To shepherd a church ready for fresh fire, fresh growth, and fresh vision.
Some will complain.
Some will resist.
Some will leave.
But the ones who stay?
They’re the ones who will witness and be part of God’s resurrection of Heritage!
Truly, the Best Is Yet to Come,
Rev. John Roberts

ONE Service at 10:30 AM
Church family…Pastor John has been carrying a message deep in his heart — a message God has been stirring, shaping, and sharpening — and he is fired up to deliver it.
It’s a message that will challenge you, encourage you, and shift the way you see your life, your blessings, and your everyday moments.
Trust us… you’re going to want to be in the room for this.
And yes… the choir is ready.
They are excited, anointed, and prepared to bless you through song and lift the name of Jesus with power and joy.
We’ll be gathering for one service for now — at 10:30 AM — and it’s the perfect chance for the whole church family to lean in together and experience what God has in store.
Studies show that over 80% of unchurched people say they would attend church if someone simply invited them.
Imagine that — most people are more open than you think… they just need you to ask.
So here’s the challenge:
Invite someone.
Bring a friend who needs Jesus.
Don’t come alone.
And let’s be honest…
Some of us haven’t brought a friend to church in a while (or maybe… ever ).
This Sunday is the perfect day to change that.
A life-shaping message.
A worship experience filled with joy.
A choir ready to raise the roof in praise.
And a Savior who is ready to meet us.
Don’t miss it.
Bring somebody with you.
And join us at Heritage this Sunday, November 16th, at 10:30 AM.
God is going to do something unforgettable.
We’ll see you there!

Let’s keep building something beautiful together—
one update, one story, and one transformed life at a time.
Grow Your Giving. Grow Your Life.
There’s a moment in every believer’s journey when life stops being all about me… and starts becoming about something bigger, fuller, eternal.
That moment is generosity.
When you give—your time, your resources, your heart—you step into the flow of God’s purpose. Because generosity isn’t just something God asks of us…
It’s something God wants to do in us.
Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).
Blessed means happy, fulfilled, and favored—the kind of life money alone can never buy.
In other words:
The secret to a fuller life isn’t getting more. It’s giving more.
When you start living beyond yourself:
You stop measuring life by what you accumulate
You start measuring it by what you contribute
You realize your giving fuels God’s mission
You begin building a legacy that will outlive you
If Heritage is going to grow, our generosity must grow with it.
Not because God needs what we have—
but because He’s inviting us to trust Him at a deeper level.
To give boldly.
To give joyfully.
To give faithfully—believing that every seed planted today becomes part of tomorrow’s harvest.
And today, growing your giving is easier than ever.
You can give securely and consistently through Tithe.ly—whether it’s a one-time gift or setting up recurring giving that helps you stay faithful in your generosity.
Give online today at Tithe.ly and take your next step in generosity.
Watch how God grows you, stretches you, and blesses you in the process.
Prayer
Lord, help me live for something beyond myself.
Grow my heart.
Grow my faith.
Grow my generosity—
so that Your kingdom can flourish through me. Amen.

Share the Blessing — Forward the Friday Mini-Newsletter!
Heritage family, God is moving in incredible ways among us — changing lives, building community, and stirring hearts with hope. And one of the simplest, most powerful ways you can be part of that movement is this:
Forward our Friday Mini-Newsletter to someone you know.
It might seem small…
But a simple email in someone’s inbox could be the spark that leads them to Christ, reconnects them to church, or reminds them they’re not alone.
Every week, our newsletter brings encouragement, updates, inspiration, and a snapshot of what God is doing at Heritage.
Why keep that to yourself?
Someone in your circle needs what God is doing here.
A family member.
A coworker.
A neighbor.
A friend who’s been searching for a place to belong.
Forward the email. Add a quick note. Invite them in.
You never know how God might use your click to open a door in someone’s life.
Let’s keep spreading hope, building community, and inviting others to be part of the story God is writing through Heritage Church.
Together, we can reach farther.
Together, we can shine brighter.
Together, we can help more people experience Jesus.
So don’t keep it to yourself — share the good news this Friday!

Excellent message! Focus on following Christ, not on the view of the crowd! Help me keep my priority system properly focuses! Lord, help me keep my eyes on Christ and not be distracted by shiny baubles along the way!
