“When You Don’t Feel Ready… Do It Anyway.”
(Because apparently the Holy Spirit refuses to wait for my feelings.)
So… Facebook.
Yes, that Facebook — the world’s greatest collection of cat videos, amateur political scientists, and relatives who vent in mysterious riddles like, “Some people need to learn to keep my name out they mouth .”
But occasionally — like a miracle — something meaningful slips past the algorithm.
The other day I saw this quote:
“Most people wait to feel ready.
Winners act before they feel ready.
That is the difference.”
And right then the Holy Spirit tapped me on the shoulder and said,
“John… that’s not just motivational fluff.
That’s Scripture wearing skinny jeans.”
Because here’s the truth:
God almost never calls you when you feel ready.
He calls you so He can make you ready.
Exhibit A: My life.
I didn’t feel ready to get married.
Didn’t feel ready to have kids.
Didn’t feel ready to preach my first sermon.
Didn’t feel ready to write my first sermon.
Didn’t feel ready to launch a contemporary service.
Didn’t feel ready to exist half the time.
But I stepped anyway.
And guess what?
God showed up — and when God shows up, the landing is smoother than your preparations deserve.
God’s Call Does Not Wait for Your Confidence
We keep thinking God works like we do:
“Lord, give me more time.
Give me a sign.
Give me a sign FOR the sign.
Give me color-coded confirmation and a spreadsheet.”
Meanwhile, Scripture says:
“The LORD said to Abram, ‘Go.’ So Abram went.” — Genesis 12:1–4
Abram didn’t get a map.
He got a verb.
And he moved before he felt ready.
If you wait until you feel ready, you’ll still be waiting when Jesus returns — and spoiler: He’s not postponing His timeline for your insecurities.
Obedience Overpowers Insecurity
When I proposed to Baby Doll (Renee), I was not ready.
Loved her? Absolutely.
Ready? Absolutely not.
I didn’t know how to be a husband — I just knew I didn’t want anyone else being hers.
When we had kids?
Not ready.
Nobody is.
I kept waiting for the “Dad Feel” to show up like Amazon Prime delivery.
Newsflash: It never came.
But responsibility grew me in ways readiness never could.
My first sermon?
Not ready.
My voice cracked like a middle-school choir student.
My notes were longer than Leviticus.
And I sweat so much I nearly baptized myself.
But here’s the miracle:
God never needed me to feel ready. He needed me to be willing.
Readiness Is Not a Feeling — It’s a Presence
Moses wasn’t ready.
Jeremiah wasn’t ready.
Gideon wasn’t ready.
Peter DEFINITELY wasn’t ready.
But God told them all the same thing:
“I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12
“Do not be afraid… I am with you.” — Jeremiah 1:8
If God is with you, you’re more ready than you think.
If God is NOT with you, you’ll never be ready enough.
When we launched our contemporary service, I had doubts, questions, concerns, and plenty of excuses.
And God whispered:
“John, I’m not asking if you’re ready.
I’m asking if you’re available.”
So we stepped out.
And it THRIVED — not because of flawless planning but because of faith-filled obedience.
Faith Begins Where Comfort Ends
Let’s be honest:
We LOVE comfort.
But comfort produces couch potatoes, not disciples.
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Translation for 2025 Christians:
“We walk by obedience, not by confidence.”
The enemy whispers:
“You’re not ready.”
God whispers:
“Exactly. That’s why I’m here.”
God doesn’t need your readiness. He needs your yes.
The Miracle Is in the Motion
God has never asked me to FEEL ready.
He’s asked me to MOVE.
Every miracle in Scripture begins with motion:
Stretch out your hand.
Take up your bed.
Fill the jars.
Step into the Jordan.
Roll the stone away.
Go make disciples.
If nothing moves, nothing changes.
You Don’t Need to Feel Ready —
You Just Need to Feel CALLED
I wasn’t ready for marriage — God used it to grow me.
I wasn’t ready for kids — God used them to mature me.
I wasn’t ready to preach — God used it to shape me.
I wasn’t ready to launch modern worship — God used it to expand our church.
What God calls you to, He equips you for —and then He surprises you through it.
Stop waiting for readiness.
Start trusting the One who is always ready.
If you wait until you’re ready, you’ll miss the miracle waiting on the other side of obedience.
