WHY THE CAGED BIRD STILL SINGS
A DEVOTIONAL FOR THE PERPETUALLY UNFINISHED
Some days happiness feels like trying to catch a greased pig at the county fair—you’ve got the desire, but that thing will slip right through your fingers and run off squealing.
And yet, Jesus keeps whispering, “This is the day.”
Not tomorrow.
Not someday.
Not when the dishes are done.
Not when life is tidy enough to post on Instagram.
This day.
And because of Acts 16, Maya Angelou, Brian Wilson, and a young woman named Nightbirde, I think I’m finally starting to know why the caged bird sings.
The Myth of Finished Business
You’ve heard it, you’ve lived it:
“I’ll be happy when…”
“When I get the job.”
“When I get the girl.”
“When I’m 34… or 55… or 93.”
“When somebody finally washes the dishes.”
Here’s the problem: as soon as you get “there,” there moves.
Happiness, like the 70s Beach Boys, is deceptively sunny—sounds like “Good Vibrations,” but behind the scenes it might take 25,550 days to learn it.
Big Idea:
Your joy is your job—and waiting for perfect conditions is spiritual procrastination.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
JOY BEGINS WHERE “FINISHED” ENDS
A. Happiness Isn’t a Location—It’s a Discipline
Brian Wilson said it took him 70 years to learn happiness is “hard work.”
Paul might’ve said, “Preach, brother.”
This devotional truth hits like Simon Cowell on a bad day:
Happiness is not found in finished business—it’s found in faithful perspective.
B. Happiness Has Dirty Dishes
We fantasize about sanitized joy:
• Clean sink
• Clean schedule
• Clean emotions
• Clean future
But joy is not a germophobe.
Joy walks right into your mess, grabs a sponge, and says, “Let’s sing while we scrub.”
C. Happiness Is Not a Future—It’s a decision
Abraham Lincoln wasn’t preaching a TED Talk when he said:
“Most people are about as happy as they decide to be.”
He was describing Paul.
PAUL AND SILAS – WHY THE CAGED BIRD STILL SINGS
Paul and Silas get jumped, stripped, beaten, flogged, jailed, chained, and thrown into the inner cell.
And what do they do?
Start a midnight worship service.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
A. The Song Is Stronger Than the Chains
Before the earthquake…
Before the doors flew open…
Before freedom arrived…
They sang.
That’s faith.
That’s spiritual defiance.
That’s emotional warfare.
Faith doesn’t deny the pain; it just refuses to let the pain run the playlist.
B. The Enemy Wants Your Silence More Than Your Suffering
The enemy doesn’t fear your circumstances—he fears your worship.
Why?
Because worship invites God in.
Your silence? That keeps Him at the door.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
C. Freedom Starts Inside Before It Shows Outside
Paul wasn’t waiting for the bars to break; he was waiting for fear to break.
Outer doors open only after inner chains fall.
STOP PRAYING TO GET OUT—START PRAISING SO GOD CAN GET IN
Everyone assumes Paul and Silas prayed,
“God, get us OUT.”
But when the doors opened…
they didn’t move.
The jailer nearly took his own life—because sound logic says “prisoners escape.” But faith logic says,
“We’re still here. Because God isn’t done yet.”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
A. Some of God’s Greatest Moves Happen Before You Move
Paul stayed because:
The prison wasn’t the problem.
The prison was the platform.
B. God Didn’t Just Want Paul OUT—He Wanted the Jailer IN
The whole earthquake wasn’t for escape—it was for salvation.
A whole household came to Christ because two beaten men wouldn’t stop singing.
C. You Keep Wanting Out—But God Wants In
You pray:
“When I get out of this season, I’ll praise You.”
God says:
“No, praise Me now so I can step into your season.”
DON’T POSTPONE JOY—REDEEM THIS DAY
Jane “Nightbirde” Marczewski had cancer all over her body, and she still said:
“You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
A. Joy Isn’t What You Feel—It’s Who You Trust
You don’t need fewer battles—you need a deeper belief.
B. Joy Doesn’t Need a Perfect Life—Just a Present Savior
This is the day the Lord has made.
Not a future day.
Not a better day.
Not a finished day.
This day.
C. Joy Worships While the Dishes Are Still Dirty
If you wait for perfect conditions to praise…
you’ll die with your hands in your pockets.
THE REAL REASON THE CAGED BIRD SINGS
Because the bird knows something we forget:
The cage is not permanent.
The chains are not final.
The night will not last.
And the song is stronger than the sorrow.
Paul didn’t sing because he was free.
He sang because he knew Who was present.
He sang because worship breaks what worry builds.
He sang because joy is a weapon.
He sang because salvation was coming.
He sang because joy was his job.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings…
STEP INTO JOY NOW
So what do YOU have to be happy about?
Not finished dishes.
Not a finished life.
Not a finished job.
Not perfect circumstances.
You have joy because you believe.
You have joy because Jesus saves.
You have joy because your cage doesn’t get the final word.
And the best part?
Your song helps someone else find theirs.
So go ahead.
Sing while the dishes are dirty.
Sing while the chains still rattle.
Sing before the breakthrough.
Sing now.
Sing today.
Sing this day the Lord has made.
The Best Is Yet to Come,

We are all responsible for our own happiness. We must always strive to appreciate the happiness we have. It is never worthwhile to mumble and complain about how one would be happy if only… Have gratitude about everything at all times!
